Charles W. Chesnutt (1858–1932) was an American author, lawyer, and educator known for his influential works on race and social justice. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, he began his career as a teacher before becoming a legal professional. Alongside his business career, he pursued writing and published notable works, including The Conjure Woman, The Wife of His Youth, and novels such as The Marrow of Tradition. Through his fiction, essays, and speeches, Chesnutt addressed racial inequality and advocated for civil rights, earning a lasting place in African American literary history.
