Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist best known for writing Frankenstein (1818), considered one of the earliest works of science fiction. Born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, she was the daughter of political philosopher William Godwin and feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft. She married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and was deeply influenced by the Romantic literary movement. Shelley’s works explore themes of creation, ambition, and humanity’s relationship with science. She wrote several other novels, short stories, and travel writings before her death at 53.
